Rethymnon on Crete
Visit Rethymnon city (30min), one of the 3 main cities on Crete, next to Chania (30min) and Heraklion (1.45min), all of them are located on the North of Crete.
From our holiday home Villa Limani is is very easy to visit Rethymnon, just head to Georgioupolis and take the national road direction of Heraklion.
The old city of Rethymnon is a mixture of little roads paths and alleys with cosy restaurants and nice Greek shops. Rethymnon also has a nice and big sandy beach just outside of the city center to the east of Rethymnon.
Although the city of Rethymnon was build in ancient times, it was never an important Minoan center. The did have its own coins ( money ) and part of it is still visual in the shield of the city, that is the two dolphins in a circle.
The old city of Rethymnon was completely rebuild by the Venecians when they decided to make a stop in-between Chania and Heraklion.
The city is characterized by aristocratic buildings of the 16th century, little streets with bows, stone stairs, Byzantic and Roman ruins and small alleys.

Every year in July there is a wine festival in Rethymnon, and on 7&8 November there is a festival for the remembrance of the destruction of the ARKADI MONASTERY.
Places to visit in Rethymnon are
the Venetian harbor,
the archeological museum, Forteza,
the Rimondi fountains
and the Agios FRANKISKOS church.
The old Venetian harbor is only a small fraction of that of Chania and it can be very crowded during summer so we recommend to have lunch of diner just out of the center... just go to our favorite restaurants on this website for a recommendation.
The FORTEZA and its archeological museum of Rethymnon are worth a visit especially because the Castle is the best kept on Crete.
