Gorges of the LEFKA ORI (White Mountains)

Many tourist walk down one of the 50 gorges in the area of the"Lefka Ori". The most famous is the SAMARIA GORGE. It is the longest (8-10 hours walk) and it is only feasible with an organized trip.

But still there are easier, shorter and more beautiful gorges in the immediate area. Choose a level of difficulty, duration. Some have a small river or even waterfalls. Some require special equipement for hikers ( ropes, walking sticks, or guide).

We recommend:

IMBROSS Gorge; 3 h walk starting on the road to Chora Sfakia, easy walk, arrival at CHORA SFAKIA and a taxi will take you back (1 h from the villa)

DIKTAMOS Gorge ; 20 min. drive from the villa until the end point and another 20 min to the starting point (top). The walk takes about 3 hours along a small river. The gorge has the name of a herb that grows there, you can also find it in our garden.

AGIA IRINI Gorge: probably the most beautiful of all and well maintained. A path descends to SOUGLIA. (1,5h from the villa)

THERISO Gorge: If you desire not to walk, the Theriso gorges the only one you can drive through. At about 30 min from the villa direction Chania turn left at the public hospital (Nosokomio) and follow the village of Theriso.

Passed through the gorge you will arrive at the village Theriso, many will stop for refreshments. But in the late afternoon, drive a little further (10min) to DRAKONA and stop for a sensational meal at DOUNIAS. This restaurant is famous for the typical Kretan SLOW COOKING.
